Robotics for elderly care
From our internet search, we learned about recent developments on robots which can help seniors. For example: “Hector" developed by the researchers at the University of Reading, UK ; "Carebot" developed by the researchers at University of Salford, UK; "Kompai" developed by Robosoft, a French company. See their photos and videos below. These robots come with a touch pad and can be programmed to remind the people to take medication, answer questions and entertain people with jokes. Kompai is designed to use ultrasonic sensors to detect the location of the person being cared for and offer access to Web-based services such as Skype and other social networks. We also learned that the researchers at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst have developed a robot that delivered speech and physical therapy to the seniors. From YouTube videos, we learned that researchers in Japan developed a robot for the elderly care. Robot can also help seniors in speech therapy, object recognition exercises to help people with dementia, emergency calls, keep in touch with Doctors and family members, health check-up and help in kitchen.
